Google AI Mode

AI Mode is Google's own conversational search tab — a chat interface that builds one coherent answer from several parallel searches. It runs on the same index as regular search and has been rolling out gradually since 2025.

AI Mode and AI Overviews are not the same

An AI Overview sits above the regular results for a single search. AI Mode is a separate interface where you ask follow-up questions and refine the answer over several turns. Both draw on the same Google index and are fetched by the regular Googlebot — there is no separate AI Mode crawler and no sign-up.

Where AI Mode gets its sources

A page can only be cited if Googlebot has crawled and indexed it and it ranks usefully in organic results for at least one of the fanned-out sub-questions. The visible source chips in AI Mode mostly come from pages that already sit on page 1 for those sub-questions. No solid classic ranking, no mention.

Query fan-out is more pronounced here

Google internally splits a conversation turn into many parallel searches ("query fan-out") and assembles the answer from the results. A page that covers a narrow subtopic completely and on its own is more likely to be used than a broad overview page. In practice: cover the long-tail questions around your topic, not just the head term.

What you can influence

The same GEO basics: be fetchable and server-rendered, a clear heading hierarchy, a direct answer in the first sentence under each heading, key facts in the text rather than only in images, a visible date, a named author, an imprint, structured data where it fits. Plus: answer the specific sub-questions of your topic as their own sections or pages. None of this forces a mention — it raises the likelihood.

Effect on traffic

AI Mode shows fewer classic links. Clicks go to pages that offer something the summary cannot replace — a tool, a calculator, a template, current data, real depth. A visible source mention without a click still builds brand awareness; for marketing and content teams, both count.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI Mode available in every country yet? Google has been rolling it out since 2025, first in the US and then in more countries — the status keeps changing. Do I need separate optimisation just for AI Mode? No — it is normal indexing plus GEO basics plus coverage of the long-tail sub-questions. Can I see AI Mode visits in Search Console? Google counts them in the regular performance report; as of early 2026 there is no separate breakdown.
