Google AI Overviews
Google's AI Overviews and its conversational AI Mode draw on the same index as normal search. Fetching runs via Googlebot; Google-Extended only controls use for Gemini training, not inclusion in an AI Overview.
Where AI Overviews get their sources
There is no sign-up, no feed and no separate crawl system. An AI Overview can only include a page if Googlebot has already crawled and indexed it. The linked sources come mostly from the pages that already rank on the first results page for the question or one of its sub-questions. No solid classic ranking, no mention.
Query fan-out: why individual paragraphs matter
Google internally breaks a question into several sub-questions ("fan-out") and assembles the answer from passages that each answer one of them. A page that answers a narrow sub-question in a self-contained, complete paragraph directly under a matching heading is easier to cite than one where the answer is scattered across the whole text.
Google-Extended does not affect AI Overviews
A common misconception: blocking Google-Extended in robots.txt does not remove you from AI Overviews. Google-Extended only governs whether your content is used to train and ground the Gemini models. Visibility in AI Overviews and AI Mode depends on the normal Googlebot and normal indexing. To stay out of the AI answers, the only levers are the robots meta directives nosnippet or max-snippet — which also remove your normal snippet.
What you can influence
Rank organically in the top results for the target question; give each important sub-question its own heading with the answer in the first sentence right below it; keep the load-bearing facts in text, not only in images or tables; visible date, named author, legal notice; FAQPage or HowTo markup where it fits the content. None of this forces inclusion — it raises the probability.
Clicks despite an answered question
AI Overviews lower the click-through rate for purely informational searches. The pages that still earn clicks are the ones offering something the short answer can't replace: a tool, a calculator, a template, a download, real depth or current data. For marketing and content teams that means the explainer article as reach, a concrete resource as the reason to click.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get into Google's AI Overviews? There is no sign-up — you need indexing, a good organic position for the question and a clearly written answer paragraph. Do AI Overviews appear outside the US? Yes, Google expanded them to many countries in 2025 and is testing AI Mode in parallel. Can I see in Search Console whether I was in an AI Overview? Google counts impressions and clicks from AI Overviews within the normal performance report; there is no separate breakdown as of early 2026.
